Dual Military BAH 2026 — Who Claims the Dependents?

Both members of a dual-military couple receive BAH at their own rate — the allowance is never split or shared. Without dependents, each of you draws the without-dependents (single) rate for your own pay grade at your own duty station ZIP. With children, one member claims the with-dependents rate (you choose who — typically the senior member) while the other keeps drawing without-dependents. You can never both claim the same dependents, and you can never claim each other. These rules come from the DoD Financial Management Regulation, Volume 7A.

Important: This tool explains the general DoD-wide rules. How the dependency election is processed — and some custody and Reserve-order edge cases — can vary by service. Always confirm your specific situation with your servicing finance office (or your unit's admin/personnel section) before making housing decisions.

How Dual-Military BAH Works

Quick Example

Scenario: An E-5 married to an E-4, stationed at the same base, with one child.

Each member draws their own BAH. The couple elects one member to claim the child — say the E-5, since the E-5 with-dependents rate is usually higher than the E-4's. The household then receives the E-5 with-dependents rate plus the E-4 without-dependents rate every month, both keyed to the base's ZIP code.

To see the actual dollar amounts for your ZIP and grades, use the 2026 BAH calculator — and run the reverse election too, just to check.
