Military Promotion Back Pay Calculator

Your entitlement to the higher grade's basic pay begins on the effective date of your promotion. That date comes from your promotion order, and each service has its own rules for setting it (DoD FMR Volume 7A, Chapter 1, Table 1-4 covers the different situations) — it is not always your pin-on ceremony date, and for some officer and Guard/Reserve promotions it can differ from your date of rank.

Because personnel and pay systems process the order after the fact, there's often a stretch where you're still being paid at your old grade. That money isn't lost — it becomes retroactive pay (back pay) once the promotion posts.

Once your promotion order is entered into your service's personnel system, the update flows to DFAS and your LES typically reflects the new grade within one to two pay cycles. When it does, DFAS automatically includes the retroactive difference back to your effective date — usually as a lump sum on the same LES where the new grade first appears.

You don't need to file a claim or submit paperwork for a normal processing delay. Just verify the catch-up LES shows both the new base pay and a retro amount roughly matching this calculator's estimate.

If your pay still hasn't updated after about two pay cycles:

1. Confirm the order posted. Check with your unit admin/personnel section (S1, CSS, MPF, PSD, or IPAC) that the promotion order was actually entered into the personnel system. Pay can't update until personnel does.
2. Bring documents to finance. Take a copy of your promotion order and your most recent LES to your local finance or military pay office and ask them to open a pay inquiry or case.
3. Keep your paper trail. Save every LES from the gap period — they show exactly what you were paid at the old grade and make the retro amount easy to verify.

Under the DoD Financial Management Regulation (Volume 7A, Chapter 1, paragraph 3.2), military monthly pay is computed as if every month had 30 days, and pay for a partial month accrues at 1/30 of the monthly rate per day. This calculator uses the same convention:

• Each full month of the gap earns the full monthly difference between your new and old basic pay.
• A partial first month earns 1/30 of the difference for each day from the effective date through the 30th (an effective date on the 31st doesn't accrue that day).

Both grades are priced at the same years-of-service bracket from the 2026 pay table, since your pay date doesn't change when you're promoted.
