2026 BAS Calculator — Basic Allowance for Subsistence

BAS is a non-taxable allowance paid to service members to help cover the cost of food. It is paid to virtually all active duty members who are not provided meals at no cost by the government.

Unlike BAH (Basic Allowance for Housing), which varies by location and pay grade, BAS is a flat rate that depends only on whether you are enlisted or an officer:

• Enlisted: $476.95/month (2026)
• Officers: $328.48/month (2026)

BAS is intended to offset the cost of food only — not to cover it entirely. It is based on the USDA food cost survey and adjusted annually.

BAS (Basic Allowance for Subsistence) and BAH (Basic Allowance for Housing) are both tax-free allowances, but they serve different purposes:

The lower officer BAS rate is a historical artifact. BAS was originally designed to subsidize meals, with the assumption that officers would pay for their own meals in officers' messes, while enlisted members ate in dining facilities where the government aimed to cover more of the cost.

Today, the practical difference is minimal in the context of total compensation. Officers receive significantly higher base pay, so the lower BAS has little impact on their overall income. The enlisted BAS rate ($476.95) is closer to the actual monthly cost of food for one person, while the officer rate ($328.48) provides a partial offset.

Almost all active duty service members receive BAS. Exceptions include:

• Recruits in initial entry training who eat at dining facilities typically do not receive BAS (or receive reduced BAS)
• Enlisted members required to eat at DFAC may have their BAS reduced through meal deductions
• Members receiving Subsistence-in-Kind (SIK) do not receive BAS

Guard and Reserve members receive BAS only when on active duty orders (typically 30+ days). During drill weekends, meals are often provided.

BAS II is paid at twice the standard enlisted BAS rate — $953.90/month in 2026. It is a limited-use rate for enlisted members assigned to government quarters that lack adequate food-storage or preparation facilities, and where no government dining facility is available.

BAS II is not automatic. Commanders must authorize it in writing under the criteria in DoD FMR Vol. 7A, Ch. 25. Officers are never eligible for BAS II.

If you think you qualify (e.g., remote site, tents, aboard certain vessels without a working mess), route a memo through your chain of command to your finance office. Keep a copy of the authorization for your LES records.

Enlisted members who are authorized to eat at a government dining facility (DFAC) may have their BAS reduced by meal deductions. The 2026 discount meal rates (effective January 1, 2026) are:

• Breakfast: $3.35 per meal
• Lunch: $5.55 per meal
• Dinner: $4.75 per meal

If you are required to eat all meals at the DFAC, you are charged the daily discount rate of $13.65 — about $409.50 over a 30-day month — deducted from your pay. Service members who live off-base, have dependents, or are otherwise authorized to mess separately typically receive full BAS with no deductions.

Officers rarely have meal deductions because they are generally expected to pay for their own meals regardless of dining facility availability.
