Key Facts
- Tinnitus is rated as a single disability regardless of whether it is unilateral (one ear) or bilateral (both ears)
- Only one 10% rating is assigned even if claimed separately for each ear
- No higher schedular rating is available, but secondary conditions can increase overall compensation
- Noise exposure from weapons, aircraft, machinery, or explosions is the most common cause for service connection
Common Secondary Conditions
Veterans with tinnitus often file for these related conditions to increase their combined rating:
- Hearing Loss (DC 6100) — The most common companion claim. Noise exposure that causes tinnitus typically also damages hearing. Rated 0–100% based on audiometric testing.
- Sleep Disturbance — Persistent ringing can interfere with sleep, which may support secondary claims for insomnia or sleep-related conditions.
- Anxiety / Depression — Chronic tinnitus has been linked to mental health conditions, particularly when it affects concentration and quality of life.
