GI Bill Housing Allowance Proration Calculator — Why Your Check Is Short
Your first and last GI Bill housing checks are almost always partial payments. The VA pays MHA only for the days you're actually enrolled each month, treats every month as exactly 30 days, and pays in arrears — August's housing money arrives around September 1. A term that starts August 25 earns just 6 of 30 days (20%) of your monthly rate for August.
This is the #1 question school certifying officials get: "Why is my housing check short?" Enter your term dates, monthly MHA, and credit load below to see exactly what the VA will pay each month — including the prorated first and last months and when each payment actually arrives.

Why Your Housing Check Is Short — The Four Rules
Other Reasons Your MHA May Be Lower Than Expected
- Eligibility tier below 100% — With less than 36 months of qualifying service, your MHA is scaled by your tier (50%–90%). Enter your tier-adjusted monthly amount above, or calculate it here.
- Active duty — Active-duty students receive no MHA, and neither do spouses using transferred benefits while the sponsor is on active duty.
- Online-only enrollment — Online-only students get a flat $1,169/month (half the national average) through July 31, 2026, instead of the school-location rate.
- Rates changed August 1 — MHA rates update every August 1 with the new academic year. Checks spanning the changeover can differ from your old rate.
- Entitlement ran out mid-term — If you exhaust your months mid-semester, payments reflect that. Track your remaining entitlement here.
