What Happens When Entitlement Runs Out?

Does my GI Bill expire?

Thanks to the Forever GI Bill (2017), Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits no longer expire for veterans who were discharged on or after January 1, 2013. If you were discharged before that date, you have 15 years from discharge to use your benefits.

Can I use GI Bill and VR&E together?

Not at the same time, but you can use both programs sequentially. Many veterans use VR&E first (48 months, better tuition coverage) then switch to GI Bill if needed. Your total combined entitlement is capped at 48 months.

Do breaks between semesters use entitlement?

No. Your entitlement is only used during months you're enrolled in school. Winter break, spring break, and summer (if not enrolled) do not consume entitlement. However, you also won't receive MHA during breaks.
