What Does a 90% VA Disability Rating Mean?
A 90% VA disability rating is extremely close to total disability. Veterans at this level have severe impairment in nearly all functions and very often qualify for TDIU if not already receiving 100%.
Common Conditions Rated at 90%
- Multiple severe conditions combining to near-total impairment
- Severe PTSD combined with multiple physical disabilities
- Advanced cardiopulmonary disease with severe activity limitations
- Multiple amputations or loss of use of extremities
- Severe neurological conditions affecting most functions
- Combination of severe mental health and physical conditions
Qualification criteria: At 90%, the veteran has near-total disability. The remaining 10% of body function is the only area unaffected. Most 90% veterans are unemployable due to their service-connected conditions.
How to Get a 90% VA Disability Rating
Examples: 90% alone, 80% + 50% = 90%, or 70% + 60% + 30% = 92% (rounds to 90%).
Your C&P Exam
For a 90% rating, your C&P exam will be thorough. The examiner will document specific functional limitations, severity of symptoms, and impact on occupational capacity. Bring all medical records, personal statements, and buddy letters documenting your condition's severity.
Tips for a Successful Claim
- Document your condition thoroughly with medical evidence
- Get a Disability Benefits Questionnaire (DBQ) from your treating physician
- Provide lay statements describing how the condition affects daily life
- Consider filing for secondary conditions caused by your disabilities
- Appeal any rating you believe is too low with new or additional evidence
File your claim or request an increase at VA.gov.

VA Math with a 90% Rating
The VA uses a "combined ratings" formula rather than simple addition. Each additional rating is applied to the remaining unaffected percentage of your body (the "whole person theory").
