The #1 most confusing thing about VA disability: Your ratings don't simply add up. A veteran with a 50% and a 30% rating doesn't get 80% — they get 65%. Here's why, explained visually.
The Key Insight: The VA uses "whole person theory." Each disability rating is applied to what remains of your healthy body, not your original 100%.
Visual: How VA Math Works
100%
Starting Point (Fully Healthy)
50%
After 1st Rating (50% disabled)
65%
After 2nd Rating (30% of remaining 50%)
The second 30% rating takes 30% of your remaining 50%, not 30% of 100%.
Step-by-Step Calculation
Let's walk through exactly how 50% + 30% = 65%:
1Start with 100% healthy
You begin as a "whole person" at 100%.
2Apply the first (highest) rating: 50%
100% - 50% = 50% remaining ability
You're now 50% disabled with 50% of your original ability remaining.
3Apply the second rating to what's LEFT: 30%
30% of 50% = 15%
The second disability takes 30% of your remaining ability (50%), which is 15%.
4Add to get the combined rating
50% + 15% = 65% combined
Your combined rating before rounding is 65%.
5Round to the nearest 10%
65% rounds to 70% (official VA rating)
The VA rounds 0.5 and above up. 65% rounds to 70%.
The Official Formula
For any number of disabilities, the VA uses this formula:
The VA's logic is based on the "whole person" theory:
You can only be 100% disabled once. If ratings simply added up, someone could be 150% or 200% disabled, which doesn't make sense.
Each condition affects what remains. If you've already lost 50% of your ability, a new condition can only affect the remaining 50%.
It prevents gaming the system. Without this method, veterans could seek many small ratings to reach 100% more easily.
Important: This is also why getting your highest-rated conditions approved first matters. The order doesn't change the math, but higher ratings contribute more to your overall combined rating.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the order of my ratings matter?
Mathematically, no. Whether you apply 50% first or 30% first, the result is the same. The formula 1 - (1-0.50)(1-0.30) equals 1 - (1-0.30)(1-0.50). The VA typically processes from highest to lowest for clarity.
Why did my rating round down instead of up?
The VA rounds to the nearest 10%. If your combined is 54%, it rounds down to 50%. If it's 55% or higher, it rounds up to 60%. The cutoff is exactly at .5 rounding up.
Can I ever reach 100% with VA math?
Yes, but it requires very high ratings. For example: 70% + 70% + 50% = 96% (rounds to 100%). Or you can have a single 100% rating, or qualify for Total Disability Individual Unemployability (TDIU).
What about bilateral factor?
If you have disabilities affecting both arms or both legs (bilateral), the VA adds 10% of the combined bilateral rating before factoring it with other disabilities. This slightly increases your overall rating.
